You Belong Here: Art for Brains That Work Differently

Okay, can I tell you something while we sit at the art table together?

You don't have to earn your place in this studio. As a neurodivergent creative who's spent way too long quietly wondering whether I actually belong, I'm here to welcome you to this creative ritual.

For the piece I created, I wanted to honor Pride Month. As I looked through my stash, I saw these great dies from Tim Holtz and Sizzix of various stylized animals and I instantly though of a pride of lions. But here at SASS...

A pride isn't about being the same. 

A pride can be a variety of different shapes, energies and styles. Every single one of them is welcome to exist with one another. No one of has to earn their spot, they just belong completely as their authentic self, simply for being here. 

And that part got me. Somewhere between the layering and the gluing, I stopped thinking about the animals and starting thinking about humanity. About you and me.

For the brain that's felt like too much and not enough

So if your brain runs differently than the world expects it to — if you've spent years feeling like you're too much one minute and not enough the next (or somehow both at the same time, that's a thing too), then this message is for you!

There is always a spot here with your name on it. Not because you finished the project. Not because you finally emptied the supply hoard — mine's still a small mountain, by the way. Not because you showed up every single day like some kind of machine. Just because you're here. That's the whole requirement. That's it.

We are all worthy of welcome

I know, I know. This reads like something printed on a tote bag. But that message is the whole point, we are all worthy of welcome!

(...and I do love a good tote bag!)

That's what we're building over here at Seeds & Starlight Studio — somewhere that your overwhelmed brain can find one small, doable thing to make movement toward your creative ritual. You get a prompt and you start small. Begin the ritual before the part of your brain that talks you out of stuff gets the chance to speak up.

I had a lot of fun with this piece and I love how it turned out! Not because it came out perfect — believe me it was a journey and done is better that perfect— but it love it because it told a truth that I fully believe in. I hope it lands with you on a day you needed to hear it.
